We know that effectively supporting people who use drugs and alcohol requires a whole system response across multiple organisations and sectors to holistically support and sustain recovery.
Within this context, the way that we commission plays an important role in cohesively bringing together provision from across the sectors to be able to meet complex needs for people who use drugs and alcohol.
Good practice in commissioning across health and social care has been discussed and researched in many forms, with many different names, including more recently as Ethical Commissioning. There is still a large implementation gap between the policy direction of good commissioning/ethical commissioning and its consistent delivery at scale.
In December 2023, Healthcare Improvement Scotland commissioned research into commissioning within drug and alcohol support. It explored commissioning through case studies in North Lanarkshire, Clackmannanshire and Stirling, and Perth and Kinross. You can read the report here.
